The original was crafted from the timbers of HMS Resolute, a British Arctic exploration ship returned to England by the United States as a gesture of goodwill. In 1880, Queen Victoria presented one of the desks made from its wood to President Rutherford B. Hayes, and it has since been used by many U.S. Presidents.
